Where to find informationThe Parish Church at Deeping St James does not have the facilities to store archives, so only the current and the last full register is kept here in the safe. We register baptism, marriage, confirmation and burial officially but also register funerals conducted in church even when the committal is elsewhere (which it always is now that the churchyard is closed for burials).
If you require an older register, which you almost certainly will if researching your ancestors, then you will need to approach the Lincolnshire County Archive office in Lincoln, where all our older documents have been deposited and where they are carefully kept in the right conditions. While in Lincoln it may be worth being in touch with the Lincolnshire Family History Society which has research premises near to the County Archive.
In many places the monuments in the churchyard can be valuable sources of information, but it is regrettable that very, very few of ours are now legible. No burials have taken place here since the 1930s but immediately adjacent is the parish cemetery, administered by the Parish Council, which is still in use. The history of the (Church of England) Parish Church is on this website, and the history of the Roman Catholic community here, including much of the Waterton family story, is on that church's own website. Both of these may provide valuable background information.
If you are just starting out, especially if you live outside the UK and are unfamiliar with systems here, FamilyRecords.gov.uk has a links page which should get you started in the right places. |
